This spring, it’s not just the tulips re-opening…

J-Angelo's reopeningMarch marks six months past since the devastating flood of 2011.  In the time between then and now, the question of  “how can this town reclaim what was lost” has been on the minds of many.  Fortunately, there are several Shickshinny staples that are leading the way.

J-Angelo’s re-opened its doors the last week of March; the cozy pizzeria looking fresh and inviting with new décor and a bright outlook.  The irresistible smell of baking pizza was already enticing passer-bys even as the windows were receiving their final stenciling.  The goods behind the glass counter proved the wonderful smells are not false advertising.  Particularly yummy looking is the White Pizza that is topped with fresh, juicy tomatoes.

“Most of the rebuilding was done by the owner,” Colleen McCoy, a long time employee and supporter of J. Angelo’s, says with a bright smile.  “We’re really excited that we’re open again.  A lot of people are coming in, saying they are happy we are open and they had missed getting their favorites.”

Skovish re-opening (mural)Skovish Pool and Spa, its location marked by the now famous concrete pencil on the sidewalk, re-opened to the public the first week of April (no April fools here).  The building is now as bright and festive as a tropical bird.  Shades of purple, blue, and sunset orange give this business a warm and welcoming feel.  Hand painted murals decorate three of the walls and include fun outdoor scenes with friendly animals and an impressive interpretation of Shickshinny past and the Native American influence of this area.  A pet store will be a newly added feature of this business.

One attribute shared by both these establishments is the noticeable pride in what they have accomplished in the face of hardship and destruction.  The endless hard work and fortitude demonstrated by Skovish Pool and Spa and J-Angelo’s Pizza shows us what can be accomplished no matter how high the hurdle…or how high the water.
